MONSTERS OF CYBERSECURITY

BE ON HIGH ALERT FOR THE

We published this piece for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, timed to coincide with Halloween. The editorial needed to make complex, technical security threats legible and engaging for a general audience with no assumed technical background.

  • Five distinct cyber threats — phishing, ransomware, fraudulent e-commerce, DDoS attacks, and compromised IoT devices — each needed a monster persona that felt immediately recognizable without leaning on technical jargon. The work had to carry both a Halloween playfulness and genuine editorial credibility alongside expert faculty commentary.

  • Each threat was mapped to a classic monster archetype, then illustrated in a flat, modern editorial style. The visual language kept the tone approachable — clean silhouettes and a restrained palette — so the characters could sit comfortably inside a news article without overwhelming the written content.

  • Each illustration was animated in Adobe After Effects and delivered as a looping GIF embedded directly in the article — giving the piece a distinctly lively, editorial quality compared to static infographics. The animations were kept tight and purposeful, reinforcing each monster's character without distracting from the surrounding text.
